We've been talking to Brett Young about his new collection of music
And we have come to the last song. I'm not gonna lie; I might have
Teared up on this one when I listened to it. It's pretty sad, but
It's sort of beautifully heartbreaking. It's one of those
Relationships where there's nothing really wrong; it's just not the
Right one. And this guy is showing such grace and kindness in a very
Painful, heartbreaking situation. So tell people about "You Didn't."
"You Didn't" is, I think, almost as sad of a song as "Mercy" was. And
The irony there for me is that I was sad when I wrote "Mercy," and
Quite the opposite when I was writing this song. But I had three of
My favorite songwriters with me — Jon Knight, Ashley Gorley and
Jimmy Robbins — who are all big fans of, like, kind of the R&B, Boyz
II Men era that I came up in. And so this was another one where we
Talked about what we wanted the vibe to be. We had written a couple
Songs already that day. And we just wanted to write an R&B ballad
Ballads are the hardest songs to get on a record. I've been very
Fortunate to have snuck a lot of ballads by in my career. But that's
What we wanted to do. That was the song we wanted to write. And so
We just committed to do it, you know, and if it doesn't work out
It doesn't work out. And so I started digging for some titles and
Ideas that I had. And I think in the same way that it's interesting
To write an angry, sad song over happy music, I think it's also
Just in a different way, as interesting to write a breakup song where
There is no anger, to be able to say, like, "You broke my heart
But I would have never wanted you to stay if this isn't where you
Were supposed to be." And I don't know that a lot of people in life
Will be able to walk away from a broken heart that way. But it does
Happen sometimes, and when it does, I think that's the most beautiful
, Truest depiction of love, is being able to say, "I love you so much
That I would never want you to stay if you weren't happy. I'm not
Mad at you; I don't hold anything against you." That's what this song
Was. And we just chased down, like, a '90s, Boyz II Men, R&B vibe
Over this sweet breakup song, is all I can call it. And I'll never
Forget, when we landed that chorus, that tag in the first chorus
When we wrote that and sang it down, we all just kind of stood
Up and walked out of the room for a minute. It made us all
Feel something. And I think if you can manage to feel something
When you're writing a song, then it's gonna get felt pretty
Hard by people when they hear it for the first time, and it
Felt really special. And I'm praying, crossing my fingers that
We can justify sending another ballad to country radio before
We're off this project, because I think it's a special song
I want to ask you, there are so many fun songs on this project
And you could have ended this with something fun and upbeat
But you kind of ended it on a bummer note, and so I'm wondering
What was the thought behind that? Because once that song ended
I was like, "No, wait! Don't leave me here with all of my tears!
Pick me back up!" Is this sort of like a cliffhanger for what's
To come, or did you just want to leave people bummed out?
You know, the honest answer about what comes next in terms of releases
And music is that I don't know. What we knew is that these songs felt
Like they made up a project. And so it felt like time to give people
Music because these all make sense together for me. The reason that "
You Didn't" closes the record is because I loved how that felt
Closing the first album with "Mercy," and also because there's a
Little bit of sass and angry in the middle, but this is the only
Really sad song on the record. So for anybody that needs to skip a
Song, they can just skip the last one. I hate the idea of somebody
Going through and going, "I don't feel like being sad," and skipping
To the next one. You can listen to seven and stop if you want. But if
You're ready to feel this, you know, you can go one more with me
And so there were a lot of reasons that we did that. But like
I think the biggest one for me is like, I loved the way it felt
Leaving people with "Mercy." It almost feels like a "to be
Continued" when you end on a slow, sad song. And there's tons of
Music. If it was time to get in the studio, we could make album
Number four now. But I want to see how people connect. I want to
See how this project lives before I decide, you know, do we start
Releasing singles? Are we on to another record? Are we going to
Start calling everything a collection? I don't know. Music's
Changing, and the way people consume music is changing so much
We kind of gotta just give our fans a little bit and learn from
How they react to it. And that's kind of where we are right now
Well, you've warned people, I've warned people: This song will break
Your heart. If you're kind of teetering on the edge, maybe don't
Listen to this song right now. Save it for later. It is the final
