Testo Stakalee - Dr. John
Testo della canzone Stakalee (Dr. John), tratta dall'album New Orleans Jazz
Back in the game there was a scrimpin' pimpin' man
With a money makin' stable
Whenever he played cards or shot craps
He left his money at the table
He was a bad luck sucker, they call him Stagger Lee
He stole his money makin' hole from a cat named Stacker Dollars
Put a straight razor through his throat
He wouldn't let him scream or holler
Left him in a pile of blood, that killer Stagger Lee
Billy Line was a gamblin' man
Hustled Stacking to a late night game
Billy showed a straight, Stack drew a pair
Stack said, "You're pullin' cards out of nowhere"
He shot Billy Line, that cold blooded Stagger Lee
There were heard who called the police
But somebody runnin' their mouth
Coulda been some pissed off player
Or some stupid hustler who heard Billy shout
Somebody dropped a dime on that bad ass Stagger Lee
The police cornered Stack
They dropped him with their.44s
Left a trail of blood behind him
Off to Central Lock-Up they go
They bust him while he was bleedin'
They shackled Stagger Lee
Stack's hoe went out to raise fund money
Find somebody to post his bail
She said, "There ain't a trick that I wouldn't turn
To get my Stagger Lee out of jail"
She swore on her heart and soul
How she loved her Stagger Lee
Stack had a cellmate named Dupree
A cat Stack burned in the past
Dupree said, "Stack, you better watch your back"
Stack turned and he shanked his back
"You shoulda known better than to mess with me
I'm Stagger Lee"
When the judge heard what Stack had done
He killed a man cold dead in his cell
Looked up to Heaven and said
"The only place fit for you is Hell
There won't be no reprieve for you
You're too dangerous, Stagger Lee"
Well they found me dead at the gallows
Stack held his head up high
Twelve o'clock they hung him
Half past one he died
Such a mean, mean sucker, that dirty old Stagger Lee
Well I told ya'll my little story
And I sang ya'll my little song
'Bout all these desperate characters
Now they're all dead and gone
The undertaker made a killin'
Off of that killer Stagger Lee
