Testo Loyalty - Woody Allen

Testo della canzone Loyalty (Woody Allen), tratta dall'album The Stand Up Years 1964 - 1968

They were so loyal and dedicated. I'd appear every single night at a
Place in the Village or uptown, and they'd be there every show. And
Afterward, we'd go out, you know, to the Stage Deli or someplace
This is loyalty. Charlie Jaffe got married, and I'm working a place
Called the Duplex in the Village. And in the middle of my show, in
Walks Charlie Jaffe in a tuxedo and a woman in a bridal gown. And
They sit at the table. They came right from the preacher, from the
You know, 'cause they didn't want to miss my act, God forbid, once
And afterward, I would go out with Jack and Charlie and talk about
Myself, you know, endlessly. Jack had a brilliant talent for
Criticizing and encouraging at the same time. It was very, very—you
Know, I didn't know it at the time, 'cause I couldn't see beyond my
Own nose, but he was very brilliant about encouraging me, saying how
Well I did that night and how terrific it was, and—and getting in the
Commercial about how—what I did wrong and why it would be even better
If I could do this, and I could get—make even more contact. And one
Major argument Jack and I always used to have—and of course he was
Right about it completely—was, I felt—he felt that if they like you
They like everything about you. They laugh at you, and they love
Everything. If they don't like you, they don't. I felt, coming from
A writer, it's strictly the material. So I felt if I went on stage
With the material and just read the material, if the material's good
They'd be convulsed in their seat. Jack said that would be sure death
For me to go on and read the material, that what they want is contact
With a human being, and if they like the human being—and he would
Point out to me, you know, like Jack Benny or something—that, you
Know, they—they have contact with the human entity there. And so they
Get with him, and they love everything he does, and they're laughing
At him before he comes out on stage even. And he was very right about
That, and I had to make—'cause I was used to years in the room by
Myself, writing. And now, suddenly, it's not that anymore. It isn'
T coming up with clever stuff in a room. It's—you're there. And a big
Thing I had to learn was to enjoy the moment. You know, I would want
To get the moment over with, so I'd be so scared, I'd come out on
Stage and, you know, talk fast and want to get my 40 minutes done
And get out of there and, you know, be done with it. But after a
While, Jack encouraged me to luxuriate in the time I had to have
Fun in the show, and don't—don't think about just getting through
It, but actually enjoy it. And I eventually almost did. I got to
A point where I could enjoy a certain amount of the shows. And of
Course, they were the great shows for me, when I could go out in
Front of an audience and have fun and be out there, you know, for
A long time. And—then after a while, I started taking questions
From the audience. After I was through with my act, I would, you
Know, say, "Are there any questions? Anything you want to discuss?
" And people would talk, and that would turn out to be maybe the best
Part of the show. Not because I'm such a brilliant wit—and I came
Up with my share of jokes—but it was because of the contact
Because they liked—they liked the contact. They enjoyed the
Experience, the social experience. But
This was all the Jack Rollins playbook
