Headphones is one of my all-time favorite songs that I've ever written
I wrote it with a really dear friend of mine, Nolan Sipe
And uh, the two of us have been working together now for maybe four years
And I'm absolutely in love with this guy
He's my, he's my age, we're, we're very different, and, but also very the same
And creatively, uh, we really complement each other really well
So Headphones was a track that I started on my iPad
And the sound at the beginning of it is an electric guitar
Playing the hook line, but that was the first thing I came up with for this song on my iPad
On this shitty little music program
Uh, and then I had, I had that and, uh, I had, uh
And that was all the track was
And I brought this track that was just a beat, the piano
And that hook line over top
And I brought it to Nolan, and I was like, check this out
And as soon as I played it for him, I saw this thing in his face
Where he kind of got up, and he stopped he was like
Wha-wha-what's that? And instantly
Instantly, we started collaborating on it and came up with
"When the world gets loud, I get louder"
And that basically started to set us off on this trail
And then I put my headphones on and go
It was just such a natural completion to that hook I did to that concept
And from that point on, I had fallen in love with the song
The lyrics really came naturally in the concept of just
That moment that we all find ourselves in where we
We want to just shut everything else out and nothing else needs to matter
Because we just need that moment for ourselves
Because ultimately in this life if we can't take care of ourselves first
Then there's really no point in us trying to take care of anybody else
So Headphones is really one of those
Like it's almost a comforting track, but it's also got so much energy that uh
The main hook, the "na-na-na" kind of a hook is also
Later on in the process became a vocoder part
It never originally was a part
But it was so inviting to hear that kind of music over top of it that
Uh, we couldn't really resist it
But Headphones to me has always been maybe one of the most dear tracks
Personally on the album and it's inception also very indicative of the way the album came together
In that it was from all corners of types of creativity whether it was
Sitting in a studio with an acoustic guitar, sitting in a hotel room with your iPad
Coming up with beats and loops
Uh that uh, headphones is the, is the, is the perfect example
Of a really unconventional approach working out
In a very conventional and convenient kind of a way
