Testo Cold Harbor - Cortez
Testo della canzone Cold Harbor (Cortez), tratta dall'album New Morning
Grant had a simple plan
Lure 'em in wide open field
Take the road to Richmond
After their defeat
Richmond would fall
And this war would be all over
We've got the better guns
Outnumber 'em by thousands
We wrote our letters home
Sayin' the Union's glorious victory's near
But Cold Harbor swallowed our bones
Cold Harbor's now drenched in our blood
Many thousand men gone
Heard the battle in the distance
As our cavalry seized the crossroads
We marched through the night
To reinforce and to hold it
Then we bided our time
We heard them digging their trenches that night
As the signal shot soared
We stepped off in the morning mist
We fought from the break of day
Charged out of the woods into a spree of gunfire
But Cold Harbor swallowed our bones
Cold Harbor's now drenched in our blood
Many thousand men gone
We lost our formation right away
Wading through the wasteland
Thousands were swept away within the hour
In a hailstorm of iron and lead
We lost ten thousand 'round noon
Even commanders said
'This ain't war
It's murder'
Dead and dying between the lines
Laid there for four days under the blistering sun
While the generals took their time
To agree upon a stalemate
The wounded were treated
Most dead were buried
On the spot where they fell
I was laid to rest without a name
At Seven Pines near Richmond
The ceasefire's silence's like thunder
Under the flag of truce
The wound never healed
But Cold Harbor swallowed our bones
Cold Harbor's now drenched in our blood
Many thousand men gone
