Christmas should be a happy time
And you know, that's why when I saw my son
Looking sad and miserable
I said, tried to cheer him up
"Hey, come on, stop feeling sorry for yourself
It's Christmas Day"
But I could see it was gonna take more than that
"What's wrong?" I said
"Look at all your presents
How can you possibly be sad?"
"Because it's my birthday," he said
"Hey, well, that's terrific!
Happy birthday!" I said
But I wasn't fooling anybody
He gave a little smile
But that went as quick as it came
I guess I could understand why
Because deep inside
I felt a little sad as well
Sure, it was his birthday
But it was Christmas, too
And everybody was too busy celebrating to remember his birthday
I guess grown-ups can understand that
But this little fellow was no grown-up
I had to work fast
"Look," I said
"I remembered your birthday and so did your mom
Okay, so some of your friends forgot
But do you always remember their birthdays?"
And he nodded his head
"But would you remember if their birthdays were on Christmas Day?"
And he nodded his head again
"Hey, come on," I said
"Not just once?"
Well, he just looked at me
He knew I was right
But his pride wouldn't let him admit it
So I said to him
"What would you say if I told you that
You had forgotten one of your friends' birthdays today?"
Well, he sure looked puzzled
"I can't have," he said
"I would have remembered"
"Well," I said
"Isn't Jesus your friend?"
Well, I guess he had to admit it then because
Like most people
He'd completely forgotten
That the original reason for celebrating Christmas
Was because it was Jesus Christ's birthday
Well, anyway, he cheered up some after that
Stopped feeling sorry for himself
And what's more, later that night
Just after he'd gone to bed
I happened to catch the tail end of a prayer he was saying
As I passed his bedroom door
Just two lines I caught
"Please bless Mommy and Daddy
And by the way
Happy birthday, Jesus"
