The Ghost of Tom Joad - Live in Manchester, 8/12/2018 - Sam Smith

This song was written by Bruce Springsteen in the 1990s
Um, he wrote it on the, based on the book
"The Grapes of Wrath" by John Steinbeck
Which is of course, if you know it
A comment on the Great Depression

I've been putting this on my shoulders recently
Because I feel like it's a comment on
What I see out there in Manchester
When I walk from Piccadilly to this venue

And you can see twenty
Between twenty and thirty homeless people
And it isn't right
And this song makes me think about those people
This is "The Ghost of Tom Joad"

Man walking along the railroad track
Going someplace and there's no going back
Highway patrol choppers coming up over the ridge
Hot soup on a campfire under the bridge

Shelter line stretching around the corner
Welcome to the new world order
Families sleeping in their cars in the southwest
No home, no job, no peace, no rest

Well the highway is alive tonight
But nobody's kidding nobody about where it goes
I'm sitting down here in the campfire light
Searching for the ghost of Tom Joad

He pulls a prayer book out of his sleeping bag
The preacher lights up a butt and takes a drag
Waiting for when the last shall be first and the first shall be last
In a cardboard box beneath the underpass

You've got a one-way ticket to the promised land
You've got a hole in your belly and a gun in your hand
Sleeping on a pillow of solid rock
Bathing in the city's aqueduct

Well the highway is alive tonight
Where it's headed, everybody knows
I'm sitting down here in the campfire light
With the ghost of old Tom Joad

Now, I hope in this room
We're amongst friends
I played this song in Sheffield on Tuesday night
And I normally have a rant
About the political elite in Manchester at this part

Now nobody in Sheffield knew who Richard Leese was
But I assume people in here know exactly who Richard Leese is
The labour in inverted commerce
The leader of Manchester City Council

He was more Tory than any of those
Blue wielding blue-blooded Tories could ever be
He's a cancer, and we need him out of our city
The homeless crisis he ignores it
He doesn't care, he doesn't care about anyone in Manchester

Me and the band, my friend Ben from the band The Madding Crowd
We have this theory that Richard Leese is the pusher
Because he is metaphorically pushin' us all into the canal
Just wish there was a bit more humanity, or humility even

Now Tom said, "Mom, wherever there's a cop beating a guy
Wherever a hungry newborn baby cries
Where there's a fight against blood and hatred in the air
Look for me, Mom, and I'll be there"

"Wherever somebody's fighting for a place to stand
For a decent job or a helping hand
Wherever somebody's struggling to be free
Look in their eyes, Ma, and you'll see me"

Well the highway is alive tonight
But nobody's kidding nobody about where it goes
I'm sitting down here in the campfire light
Searching for the ghost of Tom Joad

Well the highway is alive tonight
Where it's headed, everybody knows
I'm sitting down here in the campfire light
Searching for the ghost of Tom Joad
With the ghost of old Tom Joad
With the ghost of old Tom Joad

Cheers
